It’s the last day of January and the end of my stay in Vang Viang Laos. Despite the lateness and crushing touristy feel by the rocking youngins last night, this morning held a special magic.
As Michael Turton says, “it’s the crack of of dawn and time to get”. So out the door we went, after a quick brush of our teeth with salt and tea.
After an easy 10-minute walk to the boat launch, we paid 70,000 kip to go half-an-hour up river to view land and life sans youth and their rocking noise.
On the river, we went along quietly as our boat motor barely growled. Along the way, we saw grazing cows, lazy goats, locals washing dishes and most importantly, people smiling greatly. In looking beyond the river banks; forests, hills and valleys beckoned us to return later for deeper explorations.
At last; there on the water, I found the peace, serenity and calmness that that I came to experience. It was always there, just behind the tourist overlay.
So though I know, that in a few hours, the throngs of tourists will be back, here in Vang Viang, in the early, quiet morning there’s a gentler place to be.

1/31/2010 – Last day in Vang Viang leaves me much calmer and more relaxed than when I came.
